The Influence of Godly Elders
Psalms 71:18 (NIV) Even when I am old and gray, do not forsake me, my God, till I declare your power to the next generation, your mighty acts to all who are to come.
It is a blessing to reach the seasoned stage of life. I reminisce on the days of my youth and boast on my abilities and activities of days gone by. But I also think about how far I’ve come and all of the life lessons I’ve learned along the way that God used to make me wiser. I’m wiser in my view on life, and I’m wiser in knowing how to live a life that is rich with purpose and people. During my childhood, there were elders in my village who took an interest in me, and they made it their business to see that I spent time with them. They visited with my parents regularly to see how I was developing. They asked me questions, and listened to my thoughts. They expanded my mind with ideas, and they told me about their life experiences. I laughed at them, and they laughed right along with me. They knew that what seemed so funny to me then would eventually become a life lesson as I continued to mature. I appreciate them because they didn’t laugh at me when – as I grew older and began to taste the realities of life – I returned to them for their wise counsel. If it were not for their influence on my life – their investing time in a kid who thought they didn’t know what they were talking about – only God knows what my life could have become. What I do know for certain is this: The influence of our elders can be a gamechanger for the lives of present and future generations. They are a source of Godly wisdom. Their skin may be wrinkled, and their hair may be silver - but their wisdom is covered in gold.
